Welcome to 9th grade health for the 2004 – 2005 school year. This class will deal with American Red Cross adult, child and infant CPR, rescue breathing, airway obstruction; both conscious and unconscious, and using an AED. We will also cover other current health issues including AIDS.
This class will meet every other day for the entire school year, therefore you will have class on either ODD days or EVEN days. The assignments that will be given will be for either ODD or EVEN days.
WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENTS: Aug. 30 - Sept.3
Monday(odd)—Receive, read and go over course syllabus including all class rules, requirements, procedures and expectations. Receive textbook and fill out paper on condition of textbook. Read preface & Chapter 1 and make a list of 20 facts about information in the reading.
Wednesday(odd)—Go over and discuss the 20 facts listed and explain why they are meaningful and helpful in a first aid situation. Receive study guide on preface and chapter 1. Complete questions 1-16.
Friday(odd)—Go over questions 1 – 16 on study guide. Complete questions 17 – 36 of study guide.
Tuesday(even)—same assignment as Monday.
Thursday(even)—same assignment as Wednesday.

Assign a POSTER & FACT SHEET PROJECT on the following topics: Leading causes of death, chain of survival, recognizing emergencies, goods Samaritan laws, first aid and disease transmission, facts about AIDS, and being prepared for an emergency. Students will be given a rubric in class explaining the project.

Friday October 15 (odd day) – Test on chapter 3 pages 28 – 37. After test select a Current Health magazine article and write a one page summary of the article. Summary will be due at the beginning of the next class.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 18TH – 22ND.
Monday October 18(even day) – Students are to have a 20 question test made up on Chapter 3, pages 28 – 37. The test must have at least 3 types of questions on it with no more than 10 of any one type of question. Students will exchange their test with another student and take that test. After both students have completed the test they will give it back to the owner and correct the test. After correcting the test they will go over with each other any questions missed.

Wednesday October 20 (even day) - Written test on Chapter 3 pages 28 – 37. After test students are to read Chapter 4 pages 38 – 55 on Adult Life-threatening Injuries and list 20 facts about checking for them. List is due at the beginning of the next class

Tuesday November 30 (odd day) – I will hand back the test on pages 56 81. we will go over the test in class. ALL THOSE STUDENTS WHO DID NOT TAKE THE TEST BEFORE THANKSGIVING WILL TAKE IT TODAY!. I will then hand out the checklist and skills sheet for the adult Red Cross skills and go over how they are to be used. I will then go over and demonstrate the skills and procedures for conscious adult choking victim. You will practice and we will begin skills testing next class.

Wednesday December 8 (odd day) – Students will be issued breathing barriers and gloves to use as we begin testing on the manikins. Students are to bring in a zip-lock bag to keep their gloves and breathing barriers in and are responsible for keeping track of them and HAVING THEM IN CLASS EVERY DAY. If you lose or damage your gloves or breathing barrier you will be responsible for replacing them yourself. We will go over checking an unconscious victim, removing gloves, and adult rescue breathing. I will demonstrate and go over everything, the students will the practice, and we will beging the graded skills testing.

Friday December 10 (odd day) - We will be skills testing all period on checking an unconscious victim, glove removal, and adult rescue breathing. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR GLOVES, BREATHING BARRIER, AND SKILLS CHECKLIST WITH YOU.

Monday December 13 (even day ) - I will go over the procedures and skill for checking an unconscious victim, adult rescue breathing, and glove removal. I will demonstrate and explain all skills. Make sure you have your textbook, skills packet, and your skills checklist. You will then have the remainder of the class period to practice and test your partner.

Monday February 7 (odd day) - We will be going over and demonstrating the proper use of an AED. Mr. Stiner from CVAA will be here to instruct and demonstrate all of the information and procedures. You will then have time to practice during class. Any students who have not skills tested on the unconscious adult airway obstruction will also be skills tested today. Make sure you have you gloves, breathing barrier, and skills sheet with you.

Wednesday February 9 (odd day) – You will be skills testing all period on the use of the AED. Make sure you have your gloves, breathing barrier, and skills sheet with you. Anyone who has not skills tested on adult unconscious airway obstruction will be required to do so today.

Friday February 11 (odd day) – Final day for skills testing on the use of the AED. Make sure you are ready to rest as soon as you come to class.

Wednesday February 23 (odd day) – American Red Cross written exam will be today. Bring your textbook as you will have an assignment to work on after the exam. Read pages 82 – 91 and answer questions 1 – 19 on the accompanying study guide.

Friday March 4 (even day) – Your 15 facts from pages 92 – 122 are due at the beginning of class. We will discuss them in class and then I will give you a study guide to complete on the same pages. The study guide will be due for the next class.
ASSIGNMENTS FOR 4TH & 8TH PERIOS GRADE 9 HEALTH CLASS – WEEK OF MARCH 7 – 11.
Monday March 7 (odd day) – You must have 20 facts listed from pages 92 –112 in your textbook. The facts should relate to the procedures for child airway obstruction, rescue breathing, and CPR. We will go over and discuss the facts in class. You will then receive a study guide on the same material. The study guide will be due at the beginning of the next class.
Tuesday March 8 (even day) – The study guide for pages 92 – 112 is due at the beginning of class. I will check the study guide and then we will go over it in class. After we finish the study guide we will review for a test, which will be next class.
Wednesday March 9 (odd day) - Same as Tuesday class.
Thursday March 10 ( even day ) – Test on pages 92 – 112 in textbook. The test will cover all material on child airway obstruction, rescue breathing, and CPR. You will report to the multi-purpose room for your next class as we will begin skills testing on the child.
Friday March 11 ( odd day ) – Same as Thursday class.

Monday March 14 (even day) - I will hand back the test on child RB,AOB, & CPR, from pages 92 – 112 in the book. We will go over the test in class. After that I will demonstrate the procedures & techniques for child rescue breathing and you will practice to get ready for your skills test. REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR BREATHING BARRIER & GLOVES AND REPORT TO THE MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM!

Wednesday March 16 (even day) – We will be skills testing on child rescue breathing all period. Please remember to bring your breathing barrier, gloves, and skills checklist to class with you.

Tuesday March 22 (even day) –I will go over and demonstrate child CPR in class and answer any questions about it. After that you will have time to practice and then I will start Skills Testing on the child CPR. Make sure you have your checklist, breathing barrier, and your gloves with you.
Wednesday March 23 (odd day) – Same as Tuesday class.
Thursday March 24 (even day) – We will continue Skills Testing on child CPR. Make sure you have all materials for testing.

Tuesday April 19 (odd day) - This will be the last day for skills testing on the unconscious infant airway obstruction. Anyone who has not skills tested must do so today. Make sure you bring your textbook with you to class as I will give you an assignment on the next chapter which deals with infant rescue breathing, airway obstruction, and CPR. You must make an outline of the chapter and cover the following 5 topics: conscious airway obstruction, rescue breathing, CPR, S.I.D.S., and unconscious airway obstruction. I will go over the assignment in class and give you a rubric for the assignment. The assignment will be due the next class.

Thursday April 21(odd day) - The outline on the five topic from the chapter on infant care is due at the beginning if class. I will go over the skills and procedures on the conscious choking infant, you will have some time to practice, and then I will begin skills testing on that procedure. Make sure you have your checklist, breathing barrier, and gloves with you.

Monday April 25 (odd day) – We will finish the skills test on the conscious choking infant. All people must test today. After finishing the testing for conscious choking infant I will go over the procedure for infant rescue breathing, you will have time to practice, and then we will begin skills testing on the infant rescue breathing. Make sure you have your checklist, gloves, and breathing barriers with you.
Tuesday April 26 (even day) - Same as Monday class.
Wednesday April 27 (odd day) - We will be skills testing all period on the infant rescue breathing. All students should be ready to test.
Thursday April 28 (even day) –Same as Wednesday class.
Friday April 29 (odd day) - Last day for skills testing on the infant rescue breathing. All students must complete the skills test by the end of class.

Wednesday May 11 (even day) – This will be the last day for skills testing on the infant. All students must be completed today. After we finish the skills testing we will review for the written test on infant rescue breathing, conscious and unconscious airway obstruction, and infant CPR.
Thursday May 12 (odd day) - Same as Wednesday class.
Friday May 13 (even day) - You will have the written test on infant rescue breathing, conscious and unconscious airway obstruction, and CPR today. After the test we will review for the American Red Cross written test on both the child and the infant.
ASSIGNMENTS FOR 4TH & 8TH PERIOD GRADE 9 HEALTH – WEEK OF MAY 16 MAY 20, 2005
Monday May 16 (even day) - You will have your written test on Infant Rescue Breathing, Infant Airway Obstruction, and Infant CPR. After the test we will review for the American Red cross written test on both the child and the infant. The American Red Cross test will be the next class.
Tuesday May 17 (odd day) – American Red Cross test on Infant & Child Rescue Breathing, Airway Obstruction, and CPR. After the test I will review the results of the American Red Cross adult test and those students who received less than an 80% will re-test next class period. Also anyone who receives less than an 80% on the child or infant test will re-test next class.
Wednesday May 18 (even day) - Same as Tuesday class.
Thursday May 19 (odd day) - Today will be a re-test day for anyone who received less than an 80% on any of the Red Cross adult, child, or infant tests. All other students will be given a Current Health Magazine and will be assigned an article(s) to read and summarize. The summaries will be due the next class.
Friday May 20 (odd day) – Same as Thursday class.
ASSIGNMENTS FOR 4TH & 8TH PERIOD GRADE 9 HEALTH – FOR WEEK OF MAY 23 – MAY 27, 2005.
Monday May 23 (odd day) – We will finish going over assignments #1 & #2 on the AIDS booklet. (Refer to your assignment sheet given out in class.) After completing those two assignments you will be given assignments #3 & #4 which will be due at the beginning of the next class.
Tuesday May 24 (even day) – Same as Monday class.
Wednesday May 25 ( odd day) – Assignments # 3 & 4 from the AIDS booklet are due at the beginning of class. We will go over the assignments in class. After finishing the assignment I will give you a list of material that will be on the final exam. Bring material to review for the final exam to the next class.
Thursday May 26 (even day) - Same as Wednesday class.
Friday May 27 (odd day) - Bring your material to review for the final exam. We will review all period for the final exam.
